As the Maltese Summer heats up so do the events around the Islands, the summer of 2008 is set to become another blockbuster musical extravaganza. This year's musical genre includes Opera, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Pop, Dance & Rock.
June 20th - 25th: Malta music week & Isle of MTV
For the young and young at heart the most anticipated event is of course the 'Isle of MTV Mega Concert'.
Five days of partying culminating in the massive Isle of MTV night (June 25th). The Malta Music Week will include parties at Gianpula, la Grotta and Amazonia featuring Filo and Peri, Alexandra Prince and Malta's top DJ's.
A massive international line up of top artists and local talents will grace centre stage at the isle of MTV 2008. After the great success story of 2007, with over 40,0000 people attending the largest concert ever to be held in Malta, MTV in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority and G7 will be holding yet another Free Festival.
Some of the artists in this year's lineup include Enrique Iglesias, The Kooks, OneRepublic, N.E.R.D. and Lady Gaga.
June 28th: Creamfields Malta
One of many club events that will be held in Malta this Summer, under the backdrop of the old city of Mdina at Gianpula Fields, Limits of Rabat. The lineup includes Hernan Cattaneo, Judge Jules, Sander Van Doorn, Xpress2, Vitalc, Dirty South, Jimmy Van M and Dr. Lektroluv.
July 12th: A Tribute to Pavarotti
The musical world lost one of its most cherished icons last September when Luciano Pavarotti passed away in his home town of Modena.
Pavarotti was personally responsible for popularising the Lyric Opera and bringing it more mainstream. The torch has now been passed on to a younger generation of Opera singers and one such young talent is Malta's own Joseph Calleja.
Hailed by many critics as one of the best young Opera talents in the world, Tenor Calleja has already performed in many Opera Houses including Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) in London, the Vienna Staatsoper, Frankfurt Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opera National du Rhin in Strasbourg, Teatre Principal in Majorca, Gran Teatre de Liceu in Barcelona, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle Opera, the Civic Opera House in Chicago and many more.
Calleja will be accompanied by Nataliya Kovalova, George Petean and the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Brian Schembri. The concert will take place at St George's Square in Valletta.
July 12th - 13th: The Chilli Beach Festival
The Chilli beach festival 2008 is the first edition of a 2 day event being held at Mellieha Bay.
It will include a combination of music (local live bands & DJ’s) and sports activities (wakeboard academy, volleyball tournaments, jet ski, hobie cat regattas, windsurfing, etc). The event will start mid morning with activities and a chilled atmosphere till late evening where the actual party will kick off.
July 18th - 20th: Malta Jazz Festival
The Malta Jazz Festival takes place on the third weekend of July of every year.
Three Mediterranean nights of international jazz by world-renowned players in a unique setting take place. Staged below the bastions of the 16th century city of Valletta, and by the waters of Grand Harbour, Malta Jazz Festival certainly has a SPECTACULAR LOCATION. Organised by the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts this year the festival is from the 18th – 20th July.
July 26th: Duran Duran Concert
80's Pop sensations Duran Duran will be playing live in Malta on July 26.
Renowned for hits like Wild Boys, Rio, Come Undone and Girls on Film, the band will perform at the Luxol Parade Grounds.
August 23rd: Gozo Music Festival
The most wanted festival is back for its 7th Edition. Following the success of last year's and the growing reputation of the festival, this year will be headlined by the biggest line up ever to by presented on the island of Gozo and will be for sure one of the leading in Malta for the 2008.
The Gozo Music Festival on Saturday 23rd August 2008 will give you a night full of music from live rock to house, and the best selection from the past to the present.
Every Sunday (from 8/6 - 7/9): Sunset Sundays
The most attended and highly anticipated weekly summer club night on the Maltese isles is back! As from the 8th of June 2008, the seventh consecutive season of Sunset Sundays will be launched within the exclusive open-air surroundings of Numero Uno in Ta’ Qali – a venue reserved only for top-notch entertainment events that only the likes of Pure Promotions & Fresh Music agency can provide.
