This extensive Sports Complex utilises the flatlands west of Grand
Harbour on the outskirts of Marsa. Facilities are provided for a variety of
outdoor and indoor sport activities. These include a modem horse-racing
track, a football ground, an athletic stadium, several tennis courts, a
golf course and facilities for indoor sports and games.
The Marsa Sports Club, which operates as a private concem catering
for its members, is housed in the complex.
Until the closure of the military base in Malta, the Marsa Sports
Grounds and the Club belonged to the British Forces.
The Sports Centre is now shared by three separate authorities: the
Malta Government, which is responsible for the public facilities; the
Jockey Club, which manages the racing course; and the Marsa Sports Club,
which caters for its membership on a subscription basis.
The public grounds fall under the Ministry responsible for Youth
and the Arts. Youngsters are encouraged to participate and train in various
team and individual sporting disciplines.
The Jockey Club organises horse-racing; meetings are usually held
on Sundays from October to June, but extra races are organised on special
days and festivities.
The Marsa Club is one of the leading sports clubs in the
Mediterranean. The premises are sited among trees and shrubbery in pleasant
surroundings. Amenities include an 1 8-hole golf-course - the only one on
the island - eighteen tennis courts, five squash courts, mini-golf and a
cricket pitch.
The large open-air swimming pool is a rendezvous for members,
including families with children. The club provides a restaurant, a bar, a
TV lounge, a cards room and well-equipped changing rooms.
The Club, which is open daily between 9am and 9pm, offers daily or
weekly membership to visitors during their stay on the island.
