Diving

Malta is a paradise for divers and snorklers. The excellent underwater visibility, the unique topographic structure of its underwater landscape and the healthy flora and fauna qualify the Islands as the ideal place for this wonderful sport.

Also important is the fact that Malta is an all-year-round centre for the diver. The sea temperature never drops below 13 Celsius, and even in the middle of Winter the climate and duration of sunshine are similar to an average North European summer. In Summer, on the other hand, sea temperatures are around 23 Celsius, and divers may wear a light 3 mm diving suit or even dive without one.

places to stay in malta

Anyone who wants to dive within the territory of the Maltese Islands needs a local diving permit, referred to as the C-card. This is issued by the Department of Health and costs 1 Maltese Lira. A medical certificate, 2 photographs and the logbook of the applicant must be presented.

Any divers who wish to dive independently of a diving school have to present a certificate to the authorities equivalent to at least the CMAS/2-Star diver certificate. (It is advised to apply for the C-card through a diving school since this ensures that the administrative procedures are completed without problems.)

Golfing

Golf in Malta dates back to the year 1888, when the Governor, Sir Henry Torrens KCB, an avid golfer, decided to introduce the game to the island.

Nowadays, the main golf facility on the Island is the Royal Malta Golf Club, which is set in the splendid Marsa Sports Club, that encompasses seventeen tennis courts, five squash courts, minigolf, two billiard rooms, an open air swimming pool, a cricket oval, a polo field, a fitness centre, a restaurant and an air-conditioned bar.

Windsurfing and Sailing

The islands have been a maritime base for centuries and nowhere will you find sailing more enticing than in Malta today. The islands play host to some of the Mediterranean's most challenging races and the world's most serious yachtsmen and women.

The mild climate means that you can haul sail all year round. Malta's yacht marinas offer the seasoned sailor a port of call, while the many sailing schools and charter companies can satisfy the sea-legs of the novice and the more experienced. Choose from bareboat charter or accompanied cruising, or simply enjoy a lesson with a group from one of Malta's many sailing clubs.
