History of Malta Carnival
The Malta Carnival can be traced back all the way to the 1400’s and the Knights of St John. The Knights of St John introduced the carnival in grand style holding carnival balls and competition games. Throughout the ages the carnival has stood the test of time and is one of the highlights of Malta’s calendar year, you will still find a number of balls and lots of carnival parties and towns compete in parades with huge floats and dancers.
Where to see the carnival
Valletta is best place to be, many towns and villages have their own carnival celebrations but Valletta serves up the largest parades and the most carnival activities. Food and drink are available wherever you visit with a number of specialties on offer from traditional Maltese delicacies to ‘Prinjolata’ (sponge, almonds, meringue, cherries and chocolate).
Nadur is the most popular destination in Gozo to enjoy the carnival celebrations, it steps aside from the traditional and is quite often a place of madness. The celebrations are not organised, it is all spontaneous but year after year this small village is descended upon by numerous happy and fun loving residents and visitors enjoying a slightly different version of merriment from that of the traditional Maltese carnival.
