Gzira Malta things to do
Manoel Island dominates the Gzira sea view, this ‘fortress island’ was built in 1634 and has been used for many things over the years. It has been a quarantine hospital for ships visiting Malta to prevent the spread of the plague and cholera. It has also been used by the British as a Naval base during the Second World War. Part of Manoel Island is now an informal sanctuary for many birds and ducks which is maintained by locals.
Fort Manoel was built in 1726, it is now seen as a military engineering feat from the 18th century and is what gave the island its name, Manoel Island after the fort. The fort and island can all be seen with great views from Gzira promenade but you can also visit the island to see the bird sanctuary and fort up close and first hand. The Gzira promenade is a beautiful stretch of coastline and the promenade will take you from Gzira, alongside Sliema all the way to St Julian’s.
