Kalkara Malta is another Malta town steeped in history, the towns name comes fom the latin for lime due to the belief there was a Lime Kiln located here during the Roman period. Kalkara is also believed by historians to be the first inhabited area with people coming from Sicily. The town overlooks the Grand Harbour, entrance to capital of Valletta by water.

Things to do in Kalkara
As Kalkara is located overlooking the Grand Harbour, it has a lot of defensive buildings and fortifications. Fort Ricasoli Kalkara Malta is set on the Rinella Penisula, built between 1670 and 1698 after the arrival of the Knighs of St John, commands part of the entrance of the Grand Harbour and has overseen a number of changes through Malta’s history. Fort Our Saviour is also found in Kalkara which was built in 1724 by grandmaster Manoel de Vilhena to protect nearby Vittoriosa.
One of the main places to visit in Kalkara is Fort Rinella Kalkara Malta or Rinella battery was built in the 19th century by the British and open to the public, the world’s largest cannon can be found here, the Armstrong 100 ton gun.
The area is also well known for boat building and locals take part in regattas, traditional boat races, where they build and take part in their own boats. The demand for more berthing spots in the area has meant use of a temporary Kalkara Marina Malta.
