Mosta Dome - Parish church in Mosta, Malta

Mosta Church Malta and Mosta Dome Malta

When visiting Mosta Malta there is one thing that immediately stands out, the Mosta Church Malta and Mosta Dome Malta. There are a number of things to do in Mosta Malta, however, the church and dome are a must see, in fact hard not to see as soon as you enter the town. Mosta Parish Church is known by many as the most famous church in Malta.

What is special about Mosta Dome (Mosta Rotunda) and Mosta Church

A renaissance church one stood on the site where today’s church can be found. The original church was built in 1614 but slowly became ‘too small’ for the parish and the current church was built in 1860 around the existing site. The Mosta dome or ‘rotunda’ is the third largest unsupported dome in the world spanning an impressive 37 meters in diameter taking 27 years to build. The dome itself was based on the Pantheon in Rome and many tourist come to view this amazing structure and sublime interior of the church.

Mosta Church Bomb

One remarkable and historic story is there for all to see, the Mosta Church Bomb or Mosta Dome Bomb. On the morning of 9th April 1942, during World War Two, mass was taking place in the church when a 200kg German bomb came crashing right through the dome into the church, miraculously the bomb did not explode and none of the 300 people that were attending morning mass at the time were hurt. A replica of the bomb is now on display in the Mosta church as a tourist attraction and reminder of what the locals consider quite a miracle.
