Places to Visit in Mellieha
Places to Visit in and around Mellieha
Mellieha is an area steeped in history. When Malta was an unofficial stopping point of sorts for sailing ships going across the Mediterranean, Mellieha
Bay was a popular port. The moniker for the town got its name from the Romans as they travelled to Arabia where salt is called mellieha. You don’t have to travel far to find some great sites and attractions when staying around the bay.
For history buffs, we suggest a visit to Ahrax Tower at White Tower Bay. Located at the most northern point of the island, this special fort was constructed by the Knights of St. John who were known for building many of the historic buildings around the island. The rocky beach surrounding it is usually very quiet and a great spot for lazing around during sunset. If you prefer your history a little more recent, the Mellieha Air Raid Shelter in Parish Square where you can navigate underground tunnels that were used during WWII and get to see what life was like during wartime. We also recommend heading when you need to take a few hours out from the sun if you’re finding it a bit too hot.
One of the popular places to visit in Mellieha Malta and now one of Malta’s most recognisable sites is one which wasn’t even meant to be there permanently. In 1978, Robert Altman, Robin Williams and a whole crew took over a quiet corner in north east Mellieha and turned it in to Popeye’s Village
. The structure was only meant to stay for the duration of filming but was left be afterwards as locals loved it. Over time it has turned in to a mini theme park and even is used as a wedding venue.
Right across the road from the main bay and just a little past the Ghadira bus stop is the Ghadira Natural Reserve. It is the perfect spot for a late afternoon stroll. Protected pathways provide a number of different routes when you can take in the sights and sounds of nature in Malta without being too far away from the beach. The entire area is a protected area for birds so don’t be surprised if you come across a flamingo on your travels.
And dont forget the bay, Malta's largest sandy beach is located here in Mellieha offering great facilities for all travellers looking for that sun, sea and sand location.
