Cornucopia Hotel

The Cornucopia Hotel, Gozo, is a converted farmhouse brimming with character; superbly located in the picturesque countryside village of Xaghra and ideal for those seeking a more rural take on their Gozo getaway. The landscape is a remarkable example of the fine vistas the Gozitan locals so adoringly cherish. Lush vegetation branches out from the surrounding area and into the Cornucopia Hotel’s grounds; perennials climb the rustic stucco walls, entwine the courtyard trellises, and blossom freely around the large paradisiac garden and pool.

The inside seems to be equally graced with gifts of the gods; grand geometric features detail the ceiling; boldly reaching to a high centre focal point from the pillared arches that encircle the upscale dining area. Here, you’ll not only taste local specialties (made with the freshest ingredients) but also more traditional Maltese cuisine. Breakfast is served continental style for you to enjoy at your own leisure.

The Cornucopia Hotel features ornate antique furnishings throughout, which really gives the place a substantial feel of genuine quality. The air-conditioned bedrooms that come in double, twin and triple options are no exception to this attentive gesture of care. The natural wooden theme stays true with all the bedroom’s fittings by conforming to this style, proving that organic is just as important inside as it is outside. When you’re not dreamily admiring the hotel space itself, you might find time to hire a bike and explore the local area.

Idyllically situated on the edge of Xaghra the Cornucopia Hotel Gozo is a mere 15 minute drive to most localities in Gozo. Victoria is about 4km away. Apart from being in itself a picturesque village, Xaghra is rich in historical heritage with plenty to offer to its visitors. It is encircled by the beautiful bays of Ramla, Ghajn Barrani and Marsalforn. The village’s main square, which has a good selection of shops, restaurants and bars, is about 2km from the hotel.

Xaghra is one of the oldest villages in Gozo - one can find the Neolithic temples of Ggantija - acknowledged to be the oldest free-standing structures in the world. At the edge of the village on the other side from the hotel there is Calypso Cave; the home of the nymph Calypso, mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey. Xerri’s Grotto and Ninu’s Cave are renowned for the fantastic shapes of their stalagmites and stalactites.

The village also has an attractive windmill known as Ta’ Kola and a popular toy museum. The hotel is ideally situated for walks in the countryside. The real beauty of Gozo, apart from its stunning seascape and interior, lies in the villages. Here, it seems as if time really does stand still. The locals treasure their peace and the villages are tranquil, proving to be a wonderful respite from the trials and tribulations of everyday life for visitors.

Cheap public transport is available; however car hire is relatively inexpensive and will give wider opportunity for exploring. All roads in Gozo lead to Victoria, also known as Rabat, which is where the fortified citadel sits atop a summit. It is a great place to watch the Islanders go about their day, especially when the main market square, It-Tokk, comes to life.

The town also has a thriving cultural life all its own, with some surprising attractions ranging from opera to horse races in the main street on festa day.

Gozo is about a 1.5 hour transfer from Malta International Airport by road, including the 25 minute ferry crossing from Malta to Gozo.

The Cornucopia restaurant has a romantic atmosphere, enhanced by candles and vaulted stone ceilings.
Wake up to an enriched buffet breakfast and if you would like a light lunch, a special snack menu is served either in the restaurant or outside by the pool. For dinner there is a choice of either à la carte or Table D'Hote menus both with a variety of local and international cuisine.

Poolside barbecues are held weekly in the summer season (normally from June to September) and twice a week in August. When the evenings start to cool down there is a ‘Friday Carvery' night.

The rustic lounge bar is a cosy place for a drink.
