The Best Bays and Best Beaches in Xaghra
Xaghra is located a short distance from the coast and has no beaches in the immediate area.
Just a short ride away is the best beach in Gozo is Ramla Bay, known as Ramla il-Hamra by the Maltese which translates to Red Sands. Ramla Bay is unspoilt and the biggest beach in Gozo, its clear, shallow water and soft sand draws in local families and holiday makers. Its the ideal spot for soaking up the mediteranean sun and going for a refreshing dip in the sea, there are basic facilities including toilets and a couple of kiosks seklling local delights and drinks. Not only is it a beautiful beach, it is also an historic site with Roman Ruins buried beneath the sand. A statue dedicated to Our Lady Of Hope stands vigil in the middle of the beach.
On the western cliff of the bay is where you will find Calypso's Cave, home of the legend Ulysses who spent seven years here. This can be acceessed from Xaghra, a path just to the right of Xaghra Chuch will lead you right to the cave which provides stunning views of the valley and bay.
Just a mile shy of Xaghra on the east of the island is San Blas Bay and is something of a hidden gem. The road to the beach is a down a steep hill and many people don’t realise they are heading right on to the golden sand until they’re quite close. Some tourists find it easier to take the shuttle jeep up and down from the main road to the beach as it can be challenging, and cars aren’t allowed down because of the risk involved from such a steep decline.
There are a number of beaches located all around Gozo, a very popular beach on the west of the island is Xlendi bay, another sandy beach. Because it is a hotspot for locals, it does have amenities like restrooms, water sports rental and food/drink stands. If you’re travelling as part of a family this beach is ideal.
Now if you’re an adventurous sort and like diving and snorkelling, you should visit Dahlet Qorrot Bay. Known for having extremely blue waters, it’s a great spot to put on your flippers and have a look round in the water. It’s normally a very quiet spot and the pebble beach is ideal for sinking in to on a towel if you prefer to catch the sun in a quiet spot.
